ARARIO GALLERY CHEONAN presents Duality, a solo exhibition of sculptor RYU In (1956–1999), who established a distinctive position in contemporary Korean figurative sculpture. The exhibition will be on view from April 14, 2026, to April 11, 2027. RYU In, during his relatively short career of about 15 years, he produced approximately 70 works, continuously exploring fundamental questions about human existence and developing his own unique sculptural language. This exhibition is composed to offer a more comprehensive and in-depth experience of his artistic world by presenting both his representative works and pieces that have not been sufficiently introduced until now.

Born as the youngest son of Ryu Gyeong-chae (1920-1995), a pioneer in the field of Korean abstract sculpture, and a playwright mother (1921-2009), Ryu In left an indelible mark on Korea’s contemporary sculpture history before his passing at the age of 43 (1956-1999). He launched his career as a sculpture from a strong desire to escape from the shadows of his father and an irrepressible desire to work with the materiality of soil. Introducing precise and powerful depictures of the human body to the Korean art world in the ‘80s, where abstract and installation were the dominant mode of expression, Ryu In came into fame as a figurative sculpture artist, winning awards ranging from Korea Fine Arts Association top award, Chungang Arts Association first prize, and the “Today’s Young Artist Award” sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and Sports. Since then, he introduced new figurative sculptures by incorporating formal properties, along with the first combination of sculpture and installation. Adopting new modes of expression for traditional depictions of the human body, Ryu In won a number of prestigious awards, and became known as a great genius of his time. However, due to excessive drinking and a variety of physical ailments including tuberculosis, hepatocirrhosis, and arthritis, he passed away at the age of 43.

ARARIO GALLERY SEOUL opened its doors in Sogyeok-dong in 2006. Since then, it has established its foothold as a leading contemporary art gallery in Korea and across Asia, continuing to be at the forefront of the international art scene through its efficient representation system and bold exhibitions. In March 2014, ARARIO GALLERY SEOUL relocated near the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. In April 2018, ARARIO GALLERY SEOUL RYSE HOTEL, a second exhibition space in Seoul, opened in the Hongdae area. Running concurrently with its primary location until November 2019, the project space aimed to mirror the experimental spirit of the neighbourhood through its innovative programming. In 2022, ARARIO GALLERY SEOUL ended its Sogyeok-dong era. However, the various experimentation and ventures carried out in the gallery’s previous spaces continue to shape its future at its current location in Wonseo-dong, which reopened in February 2023. Through the preemptive discovery of young artists, steady support of represented artists, and the realisation of meaningful and original exhibitions, ARARIO GALLERY SEOUL aims to continually grow and contribute to the growth of the contemporary art scene in Korea.
