Cadogan is delighted to present Fable, a solo exhibition by Houston-based artist Terrell James, opening on the 20th of November in London.
Drawing on the natural world, light, colour and the interplay of memory and perception, Fable brings together a compelling new body of paintings and drawings. James’s intuitive, non-narrative approach transforms sensory experience into expressive compositions, inviting viewers to find their own meaning within each work.
Inspired in part by ancient sculptures and the forms of fossils and stones, the exhibition explores landscapes, habitats, geological formations and organic shapes through vivid colour and dynamic abstraction. Historical influences, including Henri Matisse, further inform James’s practice, while recurring references to trees, animals, ice and shifting terrain evoke a world in constant transformation. Through an interplay of gesture, form and colour, Fable offers an evocative meditation on nature, memory and perception.

Terrell James, a well-known Texan contemporary artist, paints the natural world through her own unique abstract lens. Her work emerges from her close attention to organic form; her process mirrors its emergence in the landscape and in nature. Although they interpret rather than depict the landscape, the organic shapes of her works allude directly to their origins in plants, animals, fossils, and glaciers. James’ expressions of her ‘familiar obsessions’ flow automatically from the subconscious as her works unfold.
