Cadogan Gallery is delighted to announce wall window table light, Elise Ansel’s ninth solo exhibition with the gallery, featuring new paintings that add fresh chapters to her sustained engagement with the work of Johannes Vermeer.
In wall window table light, Ansel extends her signature practice of translating Old Master painting into a contemporary visual language, focusing on Vermeer’s images of women near windows, immersed in light. Through these works, Ansel explores the relationship between light, perception and the materiality of painting.
The exhibition title refers both to the visible subject matter of Vermeer’s paintings and to the tension between the contemporary concept of painting as a tangible object, self-contained in its wall-like flat materiality, and the early modern idea of painting as a window or portal into illusory space.

Using energetic gestural abstraction, Elise Ansel translates Old Master paintings into a contemporary pictorial language. She mines art historical imagery for colour and form, setting aside the narrative and pictorial elements of these paintings and creating room for new interpretations. Her works interrupt linear readings of Old Master paintings, repurposing and highlighting the unexpected. The representational content is transformed into a celebration of colour, gesture, and the materiality of paint. In the process of reducing her inspirations to their most fundamental forms, she retains their power and energy, replacing imagery with dynamic movement and dramatic colour and light.
