Press Release

This group of paintings by Terrell James marked a new stage in her practice, with a stronger and more graphic use of line.

“The paintings Wayfarer, Blue Circus, and Alibi all have figures,” Terrell James says, “which I imagine as colorful characters inhabiting each picture plane. In Wayfarer, the forms are launching and floating; in _Blue Circus _they are stolidly grounded; in Alibi, they are standing together at attention.

Defined shapes dominate these works. I perceive a rhythm, a lyrical movement in each piece. Line also plays a role in all three. Taken together, the paintings offer cues to a site of specific meaning, all to be explored as the group evolves in conversation. Saturation of color yields light throughout the work.”

About the Artist

Terrell James, a well-known Texan contemporary artist, paints the natural world through her own unique abstract lens. Her work emerges from her close attention to organic form; her process mirrors its emergence in the landscape and in nature. Although they interpret rather than depict the landscape, the organic shapes of her works allude directly to their origins in plants, animals, fossils, and glaciers. James’ expressions of her ‘familiar obsessions’ flow automatically from the subconscious as her works unfold.
