A common thread in this arresting body of work is that women are worthy of reverence and respect, and Michael Gah’s fashion-forward subjects are certainly testament to this. With each paint and artfully draped fabric canvas, he brings his elegant subjects to life while actively seeking to dismantle outdated gender-based expectations with dignity and insight: these pieces are achingly feminine and simultaneously bold and outspoken. Gah grew up in a female-led home and the fact that the beautifully patterned fabrics he uses to add depth to his pieces were cut by his seamstress women in his life adds more weight to his fascinating and utterly unique process.
