MORGAN FISHER

The earliest of the works shown here is from 1966, even before Morgan Fisherin 1968 produced his first films, The Director and his Actor Look at Footage Showing Preparations for an Unnamed Film (2) and Documentary Footage’. The work in question is a painting in acrylic that depicts a box of Kodak film on a grid. This work anticipates the idea behind the series of spray paintings, ‘Film Cans and Film Boxes’, which he made two years later. If these early works by Morgan Fisher show, as the artist describes it in a text ^*, both his interest in the then contemporary Pop and Minimal Art, the specific subject he has chosen (film material), depicted from an objective point of view in an abstract setting, is already then an expression of a quite personal point of entry that is characteristic for Morgan Fisher’s conceptual mode of working in general.

The exhibition at Galerie Daniel Buchholz, the fourth solo exhibition of the artist in our gallery, for the first time shows a comprehensive survey of these works.

In 2009 Morgan Fisher had a solo exhibition, organised by Melanie Ohnemus, a site specific installation with the title Portikus Looks at Itself at the exhibition space Portikus in Frankfurt. On the occasion of this exhibition a monograph with writings by the artist and texts by Thom Andersen, Sabeth Buchmann, and Rainer Bellenbaum will be published by the Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König, Cologne in 2010.
