Press Release

√K Contemporary is pleased to present our group show, Digital×Analog⊂Media Art≠Art at KIAF Seoul 2024.

With the advancement of digitalization in recent years, the methods and mediums of artistic works have become steadily diverse. As the intersection of technology and art becomes the norm, we increasingly hear terms like “media art”, “digital art”, or “AI art”. The use of digital devices has expanded the scope of art production and diversified presentation methods, making these artworks, created with novel technology, more accessible to us. However, simultaneously, we also fear that preconceptions and biases would emerge; words like “digital” or “media” can sound too detached from more humanistic aspects, like “analog” and “physical”.

In this show, we examine and question where the essence of art truly lies - whether a viewer can connect and interact with digital art in the same way as traditional artforms.

The participating artists are not bound by existing forms or rules, but rather externalize their expressions directly through physical objects which they regard as art. As technology advances, better methods of expression may emerge. That is why the artists are applying their utmost in the realm of artistic expression within the scope of what is currently possible.

As we endeavor to enrich the art scene of our next generation, we believe that the preservation and development of our society’s culture lies within the viewers as much as the artists. The viewers would need to face artworks with an honest and open mind. If viewers, through their own unique perspectives, can engage in dialogue with these creations, artworks have the potential to become the ultimate universal language.

Artworks do not confirm or deny the ambiguities of the world, but rather reflect the artist’s perspective. Perhaps this is why they continue to have a universal allure regardless of time and technological advancement. It is our hope that this exhibit awakens a new possibility and perspective in each of you as we invite you to embrace these works.
