Firenze Lai is a contemporary artist whose figurative paintings chart the tensions of the human condition against the backdrop of city life, psychical states, and collective identity.
Raised in a public housing estate on Tsing Yi Island, Hong Kong, Lai developed an early fascination with physical difference and urban navigation, shaped by her working-class upbringing and the city’s labyrinthine infrastructure. She studied painting at Hong Kong Art School, graduating in 2006, and later co-founded Hulahoop Gallery in Hong Kong before relocating to London in 2022.
Firenze Lai’s art investigates how bodies move through physical, social, and imagined space, using elastic, anonymised figures as proxies for psychological and social states. Drawing from diverse influences—including metropolitan density and global art histories—she foregrounds liminality and belonging, often referencing displacement, group dynamics, and the architecture of everyday life. Her signature palette of gestural brushwork and atmospheric colour shapes scenes of both intimacy and political undertone, as in works like Red Curtain (2018) and The True North (2024). Titles are suggestive, operating like ‘notes passed to the viewer’ to open interpretive space.
Firenze Lai’s practice has been featured in leading magazines, including Ocula Magazine. For an in-depth interview, see ‘Firenze Lai: Figures of Thought’ published by Ocula.

Firenze Lai’s mother worked at a snake soup restaurant, which led to her mother’s hand’s being disfigured by the work required. This fed Lai’s fascination with bodily difference; Lai also began painting professionally only in 2011, with nocturnal sessions in a modest studio.
