MAKI Gallery is pleased to make its Frieze Seoul debut at the fair’s fifth edition, presenting a solo exhibition by Japanese artist Keisuke Tada.

Born in Nagoya in 1986, Tada works with paint as a traditional artistic material while incorporating approaches that evoke industrial painting and special-effects fabrication to explore a state in which the work is both painting and not painting. The presentation features the premiere of the largest work to date from the artist’s signature Painting of Incomplete Remains series—a monumental new painting measuring approximately 2.6 meters in width—alongside other new works from the series. Based on fictional landscapes constructed in digital space, these paintings feature deliberately introduced cracks and peeling surfaces that imbue digitally constructed fictions with temporality and materiality, functioning as essential elements within the structure of each work. By layering traces of time onto fictional landscapes, Tada explores the possibilities of painting as a medium, centred on the fundamental question: “What does it mean to exist?”

About the Artist

Born in 1986 in Aichi, Japan, Keisuke Tada received both his BFA and MFA in oil painting from Aichi University of the Arts in 2010 and 2012, respectively. Fascinated by the sensory experiences offered by video games and other virtual worlds, Tada creates paintings that explore the blurry boundary separating reality and fiction. His trace / dimension series mimics assemblages of wooden boards, metal chains, and ceramic tiles; his Heaven’s Door series resembles antique doors that seem to have been attacked with an axe. Despite their convincing appearances, the works are crafted entirely out of paint. In Paintings of incomplete remains, the artist fabricates time by artificially aging the surface of each canvas, yielding them a likeness to classical European paintings. It could be said that Tada, who investigates the conflict between what exists and what doesn’t through his unconventional techniques, brings new dimension to the medium of painting.
