JESS ALLEN

Early Years

Born in 1966 in Dorset, United Kingdom, Allen spent much of her childhood in London. She pursued foundational studies at Camberwell College of Arts before earning a BA Honours in Fine Art from Falmouth School of Art. After her studies, she established a studio in Cornwall, where she continues her painting practice.

Style and themes

Allen’s paintings are primarily interior domestic scenes. When figures are incorporated, they are often self-portraits of the artist, with some glimpses of her husband. Her paintings often depict the domestic everyday—empty chairs, sofas, and books—imbued with a sense of human presence. The scenes evoke layered and introspective readings, suggesting subtle, complex, and perhaps familiar narratives behind the seemingly mundane subjects. Poetic titles deepen these narrative associations.

Use of shadows

Frequently, figures in Allen’s paintings are depicted solely by their shadows, falling across walls and upholstery, contrasting with the bright sunlight beaming through paned windows. Allen also frequently paints patterns of sunlight without figures—when cast across quiet interior scenes, the focus shifts to light instead of shadow, and its slow, warm journey through a space during a day. This subtle interplay between light and darkness generates an introspective psychological space, where one can reflect on space and time.

the passing of time (2023)

In this oil on canvas piece measuring 140 x 160 cm, Allen portrays an interior scene including a self-portrait of the artist lying on the couch reading. On the wall above, five still-life studies are hung, colours cleverly coinciding with those in the scene. Light from the window falls across the couch and the figure, emphasising the transient nature of light and the impermanence of human presence.

even the shadows are full of light (2023)

This painting encapsulates Allen’s characteristic exploration of the interplay of light, shadow and figures in a simplistic way. Here, two figures’ shadows are cast through the late evening light through a window onto warm ochre couch cushions. The meeting of the shadows’ heads mirrors the nestling of the cushions, suggestive of relationships and objects affected by shared space and time.
