Starkwhite is pleased to present Gordon Walters: From the Archive from 5 - 29 February 2020, in partnership with the Walter Estate.

The exhibition highlights the way Walters used drawing, collage, and preparatory studies (gouache and acrylic on paper) to explore the dynamic elements he used in his paintings. Drawn entirely from the collection and archives of the Walters Estate, which is housed at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery, the exhibition traces the progress of the artist’s abstraction over 56 years, focusing on many of his lesser-known motifs.

About the Artist
Gordon Walters (1919-1995) is best known for his paintings employing the koru, the curving bulb form from Maori moko and kowhaiwhai rafter patterns. From 1956 until his until his death he undertook a rigorous investigation of the koru form in the context of international modernism. He Mondrian-ised the koru, straightening and regimenting its scroll-like forms, taking it from organic to strictly geometric. 2023 saw the launch of a comprehensive monograph, Gordon Walters

, researched and written over several years by Dr. Francis Pound. At Art Basel Hong Kong 2014, Starkwhite and the Walters Estate staged an exhibition of his koru paintings from 1956 - 1983, along with Chrysanthemum (1944), which is considered to be one of his most important early works.
