JIANG MIAO

Born in 1981 in Jilin, China, after graduating from the China Central Academy of Fine Arts with a masters degree in Prints and Multiples, Jiang Miao continued to pursue her career as an artist. Art has been her nature since a very young age. She strived to achieve mastery in the academy. Years of endeavour, multiple breakthroughs have forged her distinctive technique and artistic expression. She delved into the traditional Chinese philosophy, and quest the intangible and mystical power of the universe through the making process of her artworks where she wanders in her inner landscape to search for the answer to the ultimate truth of life. Under her carving works hide dozens of layers of colours. Each layer captures the artist’s expression of the light of life and colours she felt from the powerful sun. Her ingenious carving techniques and composition connote the strata of energy, engineering a sacred life whorl from the higher world. Her works from various series seem discrete and at the same time relevant to the same cosmic space.

‘Origin’ series sculpts the rudimentary form of living things. From there, they undergo numerous regenerations, demonstrated by the reincarnation of life after death and the cellular reorganisation of organisms. Awakening and entry of new ideas also embody the process of rebirth. Jiang Miao invites the audience to consciously complete the ultimate form for the works from this series. 瑞 or Auspice carries the meanings of blessing, mythical animals and the gemstones used for ancient religious practice in Chinese culture. Artworks from this series chained various symbols in oriental culture. For instance, the spiritual beast in the paintings delineates the totem of dragon in oriental wisdom. Jiang Miao fabricates a world that exudes an inviolable aura, engraved with the wisdom and thoughts left by the ancient times. It emanates a tranquil atmosphere, allowing nature to stay as they are. She prays for peace, wishing to use her art to awaken the inner power of humankind.
