An Gyungsu Biography

AN Gyungsu (b. 1975) turns his attention not to landscapes in the conventional sense, but to scenes that resist being recognized as landscapes altogether. His paintings begin with questions about these scenes and the ways in which they are perceived. For many years, the artist has observed ruins that have long since lost their original form, as well as sites where byproducts and remnants detached from their original contexts have become entangled. These are spaces in which the structures that conventionally define landscape have collapsed and fragmented into states of disorder. They are anonymous places, representations of an unstable world, and precarious conditions suspended between one landscape and another. AN understands landscape as “a structure composed of countless overlapping layers.” Within the interstices of these layers, he discovers ruins and explores the fractured strata of place. These layered spaces remain embedded somewhere within the landscapes of the present, lingering as images and persisting as sensations.

AN was born in Busan, Korea in 1975. He has held solo exhibitions at ARARIO MUSEUM in SPACE (Seoul, Korea, 2025), Primary Practice (Seoul, Korea, 2025), Museum of Moscow (Moscow, Russia, 2022), Pibi Gallery (Seoul, Korea, 2021; 2019), Sahng-up Gallery (Seoul, Korea, 2018), Gallery Chosun (Seoul, Korea, 2016), Gallery Hyundai Window Gallery (Seoul, Korea, 2014) and more.
