Austen Deans’ paintings of the landscape of the Canterbury province of New Zealand's South Island epitomise a more conservative element of New Zealand regionalism in contemporary art of the 1930s and 1940s.
Deans focused on capturing the light, atmosphere and topography of Canterbury (particularly the Southern Alps and High Country) with a laconic matter of fact style. He was a popular artist and a winner of the Kelliher Art Award for in 1962 and 1963, New Zealand's most prestigious art award of the time.
Austen Deans graduated from Canterbury College, Christchurch, in 1937. His work is represented in the permanent collection of the Christchurch Art Gallery, New Zealand.
