Chang Jin Biography

Chang Jin has been one of the most important ink artists and a leading representative of the New Literati Group in mainland China since the 1980s. Chang studied figure and landscape painting at Jiangsu Provincial Academy of Traditional Chinese Painting. After graduating in 1981, he remained there to teach and administer the Academy. He is currently the Chairman of Academy’s Research Institute, Vice-chairman of Academy’s Arts Committee, also a member of Chinese Artists Association in mainland China.

Chang’s landscape paintings are poetic and dreamy, harmonic and elegant. His brush strokes are simple and light. The dedicate texture of his dry brushwork creates an effect of transparency, giving the landscape a unique style of own. He fuses the complex characteristics of traditional Chinese paintings from the dynasties of Southern Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing, making his expression contemporary as well as traditional.

Chang received several awards from the mid-1980s, including the 2nd prize of the 6th China Arts Exhibition in 1984, winner of the same exhibition in 1986, the “Chinese Young Artists Prize” in 1989, winner of the 1st Landscape Painting Exhibition of Jiangsu Province in 1998. He is acclaimed as the typical landscape artist in southern China.

He has had more than 20 solo and group exhibitions in USA, Germany, Australia, Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong since 1984. Alisan organized two group exhibitions showcasing Chang Jin’s portrait paintings in 1997 and 1999.
