Early Years
Deborah Tarr was born in Manchester in 1966. She studied painting at the Winchester School of Art, earning her BA in 1988.

Deborah Tarr is quoted as saying: “I keep faith in the power of art to be transformative and lift the spirit—that’s my basis. It is the crucible that brings people together.” Tarr’s landscapes and moments from her life blend figuration and abstraction to allow viewers a glimpse into the environments the artist occupies. Tarr has described the painting process as a “conundrum”, deciding what to remove, what to add and when to be restrained. Organic forms in oil paint characterise her work, her horizontal or vertical placement of colour suggesting terrain, sky or topography.
- Tarr’s 2023 exhibition The Archaic Landscape was inspired by her travels to Palm Springs and Joshua Tree in the US, as well as time spent in the west of England. Red Rock Canyon and Midsummer, North Fork present earthy tones, while Oasis is more dreamlike.
- The frame plays a key role in 2025’s 7pm, L’Hotel—gilt leaves highlight the turquoises, magentas and lilacs in the centre of the composition.
- In the top left corner of The Painted Desert, Arizona (2025), a very small red moon hovers calmly. The orange-red desert itself appears towards the bottom of the picture.
