Gyan Panchal (b.1973, Paris. Lives and works in Faux-la-Montagne, Creuse, and Paris) salvages everyday objects, interrogates and re-casts them as sculptures. In the vein of Arte Povera, he pares back each item and dissociates it from its original function and value system. In this process of abstraction, Panchal gets to the root of each object’s materiality: he sands back wood, beats metal, drains fabric of colour. In doing so, he lays bare the corporeal qualities and lifecycle of the object as well as the histories of its manufacture and consumption.
Gyan Panchal received his DEA from the University of Paris-I Parthéon-Sorbonne, Paris in 2000 and his post-diploma from Jan van Eyck Academy, Maastricht, Netherlands in 2004. He is Professor of sculpture at Esacm, Clermont-Ferrand.
His work has been shown internationally in solo and group shows, including, most recently: Museum of Modern Art Saint Etienne, Saint Etienne (2019); Thalie Art Foundation, Brussels (2018); Musée departmental d’art contemporain, Rochechouart (2017); Frac Ile-de-France, Paris (2017); Maisterravalbuena, Madrid (2016); Les Tanneries contemporary art centre, Amilly (2016).
Panchal’s work is part of a number of prestigious public collections, including Centre Pompidou-National Museum of Modern Art, Paris; Fonds National Foundation for Contemporary Art, France; FRAC Piemonte Collection, Turin; and Museum of Modern Art, Paris.
