James Clar Biography

James Clar (b. 1979, Filipino-American) is a light and media artist whose work has been included in numerous exhibitions at museums and galleries worldwide, as well as being in various private and institutional collections.

Clar studied film at New York University and received his Masters from NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program. His interest is in new technological production processes and their application to artistic narrative forms.

His work investigates the conceptual and narrative possibilities of light and technology—systems that have become integral to our daily lives, shaping the way we receive information and communicate. They influence our perception of reality, time, and space. Each communication system emphasises certain types of information while simplifying or limiting others. These modulated effects on perception have become a central focus of his practice, serving as a means to experiment with narrative forms. Clar’s work operates as both analysis and observation, examining how media and technology affect our understanding of culture, nationality, and identity. His practice engages with new technologies and production processes as both medium and subject, exploring their transformative impact on human behaviour.
