Joëlle Joubert Biography

Joëlle Joubert (b. 2000) is a visual artist who lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa.

Her practice is rooted in painting but expands across mediums: drawing, photography, and found imagery are folded into richly layered canvases that probe the emotional weight of concealment, vulnerability, and sentimental attachment. Her compositions often emerge from processes of strategic veiling and accumulation, reflecting on the tender thresholds between exposure and protection, public and private, memory and sensation.

A graduate of the Michaelis School of Fine Art (BAFA, 2022), Joubert is part of a younger generation of South African painters experimenting with formal approaches to intimacy, interiority, and the psychological charge of image-making. With an instinct for texture and symbolic resonance, she treats oil paint as both skin and surface an emotionally saturated field through which themes of guarded innocence, sentiment, and private ritual unfold.

In 2024, she participated in Sessions, a mentorship and development programme culminating in the group exhibition CLAMJAMFRY MONK. At 25 years old, her work has featured in a growing number of prominent exhibitions, including institutional and commercial platforms across South Africa.
