KEITH STEVENS

b. 1940, Australia
Keith Stevens Biography

Keith Stevens was born c.1940s in the far north of South Australia. He is a member of Tjungu Palya, one of Australia's leading Aboriginal owned and operated art centres. Stevens is the most senior man at Nyapari, where Tjungu Palya is located and he is the main custodian for the Piltati creation story.

Steven's rendering of the negative space as the positive makes him unique; the protagonists in his paintings are embedded in the black ground of his canvas. Red is symbolically a colour associated with senior men and power; to stand in front of his canvas is to feel the power of the Australian ancient desert. The variations in tone symbolise the changes in the landscape.

Stevens is represented in public institutions including the National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of South Australia, and Artbank.
