Moses Hamborg Biography

Moses Hamborg is a portrait painter based in Los Angeles, USA and Dakar, Senegal. Born in 1995 in Huntington Beach, California, Hamborg moved to Italy to study drawing and painting. After graduating from the Florence Academy of Art, he was awarded the Artist in Residence position. Following his residency, he took on portrait commissions in Europe and the US while furthering his training at Charles H. Cecil Studios.

In addition to exhibiting in group shows and having work in private collections across Europe, the United States, and West Africa, Hamborg’s work is in the permanent collections of the New Salem Museum of Art, USA and the Manifattura Tabacchi, Italy. He was awarded a Certificate of Excellence from the Portrait Society of America in 2019 and exhibited in the BP Portrait Award 2020 at the National Portrait Gallery, London. In 2021, after spending time painting in Freetown, Sierra Leone, he was accepted into Kehinde Wiley’s artist residency, Black Rock Senegal. Hamborg subsequently exhibited at the 14th Dak’Art Biennale in 2022 and the Dak’Art OFF in 2024. His work was most recently featured at the Harvey B Gantt Center in North Carolina, USA.
