Ngupulya Pumani Biography

Ngupulya Pumani was the eldest daughter of Milatjari Pumani and began painting a year after her mother. She became one of Mimili Maku Arts’ senior painters and served for many years as chairperson of the art centre.

Ngupulya’s visual language developed from, but did not replicate, her mother’s. Milatjari’s open fields and loose dotting became denser, more concentrated passages of colour in Ngupulya’s hands. Her younger sister Betty Kuntiwa Pumani and daughter Josina Pumani also paint Antara, extending a remarkable family practice across three generations while developing distinctly individual approaches to the same Country.
