Pierre Moignard was born in 1961 in Tébessa, Algeria.
Pierre Moignard’s paintings could be described as painted collages without scissors. He borrows from the images of the great names of art history, such as Manet, Goya, De Kooning, or Picasso, but beyond homage and quotation. He says he benefits by the work of others, and thus his canvases re-invent the intricacy between what is done (painted) and what is borrowed (already painted). This unnatural adjustment is invented in the painting and renews it.
His practice goes still further with his films Who Chooseth Me, Notes for the Merchant of Vegas (2009), and Holyland Experience (2013), produced in the United States. With them, he borrows from his own films, which generate new series of paintings.
Pierre Moignard was exhibited at gallery anne barrault (Paris, 2018), at Cesson-Sévigné Cultural Center, and at the MAMCO (Geneva, 2010). He also participated in the new presentation of the permanent collections of the Musée d’Art Moderne de La Ville de Paris in 2017.
His works are in the collections of Centre Pompidou, Paris, in the Fonds National d’Art Contemporain, Paris (FNAC), of Geneva MAMCO, and of the Fonds Régional d’Art Contemporain (FRAC) of Ile de France, Rhône-Alpes and Auvergne.
At the moment, his series (Self-portraits) can be seen at the exhibition “Lignes de vies” at the MACVAL (Vitry, Val de Marne). He is now working on his first monograph to be due soon.
