RUBY TJANGAWA WILLIAMSON
b. 1940Ruby Tjangawa Williamson was a senior Pitjantjatjara woman of considerable cultural authority, born around 1940 in the bush west of Amata. Her family settled at Musgrave Park Station in the mid-1950s, where she later married a stockman.
Long before she began painting, Williamson was an accomplished hunter, punu (wood) carver, tjanpi (grass) weaver, dancer and storyteller. She began painting in 2000 and became part of the early generation of artists at Minymaku Arts, developing a distinctive and experimental visual language grounded in Country and cultural knowledge
