Samuel Hodge Biography

Samuel Hodge’s practice draws on a twenty-year archive of material, juxtaposing specific objects from unfamiliar places and reanimating imagery in a potentially never-ending process. In these actions, Hodge approaches this process as a lively assemblage where repetition, failure, and material accumulation are harnessed as modes of thinking and making.

Hodge’s recent exhibitions include Milk, Vodka, Shampoo, and Honey, CASSANDRA BIRD SYDNEY; Romance Was Born Portrait, the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra; Young, MaPH, Melbourne; Leagues, Townsville Regional Galleries; The Public Body, Artspace, Sydney; The Wit of the Staircase, UNSW Galleries, Sydney; The Imponderable Archive, WerkArtz, Los Angeles; and Flight, Casula Powerhouse, Sydney.

In 2017, he was the Artist In Residence at Carriageworks, Sydney, where he presented two public programs in the form of an experimental performance. In 2019, Hodge was awarded the UNSWAAD Cité Des Arts International Studio Residency in Paris. Additionally, Hodge’s collaborations have included Melbourne dance company Chunky Move and a collection with Australian fashion icons, Romance Was Born.

Hodge’s works have been collected by the National Portrait Gallery, the National Gallery of Australia, Murdoch University and MAPh (Museum of Australian Photography) as well as local and international private collections.
