CASSANDRA BIRD is delighted to announce the upcoming solo exhibition by artist, Samuel Hodge presenting a new body of work titled ‘Milk, Vodka, Shampoo, and Honey’.
Drawing on the layered histories and material resonance of milk, honey, vodka, and shampoo, Hodge transforms photographs from his lifelong archive into expanded forms of painting. Layered, collaged, and charged with memory and alchemy, these mixed media artworks emerge from a situational experiment that questions what a painting can be at the intersection of material, lived experience, and the discovery of histories within.
Samuel Hodge creates a space for suspension, transformation, and intimacy, where fleeting moments, real experiences and gestures, circulate, merge, and elevate our perception of time, material, and memory. Hodge’s artistic process allows past and present to coexist, photographs dissolve into paint, materials mingle, and moments are continually reimagined, inviting viewers into the evolving pulse of lived experience, a fluid state of tenderness within our everyday lives.
Hodge’s recent exhibitions include Romance Was Born Portrait, the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra; Young, MaPH, Melbourne; Leagues, Townsville Regional Galleries; The Public Body, Artspace, Sydney; The Wit of the Staircase, UNSW Galleries, Sydney; The Imponderable Archive, WerkArtz, Los Angeles; Flight. Casula Powerhouse, Sydney.
In 2017, he was the Artist In Residence at Carriageworks, Sydney, where he presented two public programs in the form of an experimental performance. In 2019, Hodge was awarded the UNSWAAD Cité Des Arts International Studio Residency in Paris. Additionally, Hodge’s collaborations have included Melbourne dance company Chunky Move and a collection with Australian fashion icons, Romance Was Born. Hodge’s works have been collected by the National Portrait Gallery, the National Gallery of Australia, Murdoch University and MAPh (Museum of Australian Photography) as well as local and international private collections.

Samuel Hodge’s practice draws on a twenty-year archive of material, juxtaposing specific objects from unfamiliar places and reanimating imagery in a potentially never-ending process. In these actions, Hodge approaches this process as a lively assemblage where repetition, failure, and material accumulation are harnessed as modes of thinking and making.
