SANDY BRUMBY
1935-2017, AustraliaSandy Brumby began painting at Ninuku Arts in 2010, in his sixties, after a working life across the pastoral borderlands of northern South Australia and the southern Northern Territory. Raised at Victory Downs, he later worked as a stockman at Mount Cavanagh and lived at Pukatja, Amata, Pipalyatjara and Kalka.
Cataracts meant Brumby worked close to the canvas, developing a slow and deliberate approach in which each painting became an experiment. During a 2010 residency at Ninuku Arts, Australian abstract painter Ildiko Kovacs encouraged Brumby to work with a paint roller, a technique that became important to his developing practice.
