Shayla Marshall Biography

Shayla Marshall was born in 1999 in Miami, Florida, and is currently based between Miami and London, where she has been pursuing a Master’s degree in Contemporary Art Practice at the Royal College of Art, developing a mixed-media, world-building practice grounded in Black diasporic experience.

Marshall’s practice combines photography, installation, and sculptural elements, often using both historic and contemporary photographic techniques to challenge linear histories and reframe Black life. Her work draws on Miami’s cultural landscape and the everyday spaces of Black life, extending these investigations into her graduate projects and exhibitions across the UK and the US.

Shayla Marshall Exhibitions

Shayla Marshall recent exhibitions and projects include:

  • Poetics of Becoming, SANKOFA at the Royal College of Art’s Hangar Space in late 2025, a project foregrounding Black memory, transformation, and futurity.
  • Her public installation Blue Magick in a Walgreens storefront at 23rd Street and Collins Avenue in Miami Beach, organised by The Bass and Bakehouse Art Complex, presenting intimate scenes of Black hair care as a sensorial environment and remains on view as an ongoing commission.
  • What’s in Your Container?, a multi-artist project and exhibition developed with Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator (DVCAI) that activates the metaphor of the shipping container to address Caribbean and Black diasporic histories, trade, and memory. Her contribution, Tales of Our Matriarch, uses large-scale black-and-white photographic imagery of Black women to honour intergenerational caregivers and to link personal family narratives to wider diasporic routes and displacements. This engagement builds on her ongoing relationship with Bakehouse Art Complex in Miami, where she is listed as a Summer Open 2025 artist.
