Simon Ingram Biography

Simon Ingram investigates painterly logic in mark making, patterns of positioning pigment application - the machinelike characteristics of studio practice. Using systems to discover different qualities inherent in different placement formulae, Ingram became known for two sorts of approach in parallel: one involved gridded handmade canvases where artificial life systems dictate the compositional results – making his body like a machine; the other used a ‘thinking’ electronic robot of Lego units, programmed with algorithms to apply paint.

More recently he has become interested in VFL (Very Low Frequency) radio waves, inaudible electromagnetic ‘sounds’ that fluctuate under the influence of solar activity. From these – using a radio telescope - he makes graphlike oil paintings of zigzagging parallel lines. Using such programmed machines Ingram can modify the sequence, density and length while assessing the progress of the painting. It is a tool to extend his thinking, not a substitute.

Ingram exhibits regularly in the United States, Europe and in his home country, New Zealand.
