SOPHIA LOEB

From the heightened sensory experience of her own meditation practice, Loeb’s painting materialises sensation, be it internal – our thoughts and feelings, for example – or external – our perception of other life and environments. She takes a sculptural approach to her paintings, working both horizontally and vertically, constantly turning the canvas as she works. In her painting, Loeb evokes streams and pools of colour through layered gestural brushstrokes. Making use of unconventional tools, as well as applying loose pigment and oil stick with her hands, her painting is driven by instinct. Between frenetic gesture and compositional restraint, Loeb’s practice embraces the freedom of organic movement alongside the measured awareness of meditation.

Sophia Loeb (b. 1997, São Paulo, Brazil) lives and works in London. She received her MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art, London, and earned her BA in Fine Art and History of Art at Goldsmiths, University of London. She is currently presenting Panta Rei sobre a Estrata, a solo exhibition with Fortes D’Aloia & Gabriel, Rio de Janeiro, and she is included in Abstraction (re)creation - 20 under 40, X Museum, Beijing, travelled from Le Consortium, Dijon, France, and At the Limits of Form, Museu Inimá de Paula, Belo Horizonte, Brazil. In 2023 Loeb had her first solo exhibition with Pippy Houldsworth Gallery, Todos os Seres são de Todos os Seres (All Beings are of All Beings). Loeb’s recent group exhibitions include Aberto 4, Maison La Roche, Paris (2025); Ingleby Gallery, Edinburgh (2024-5); The Arts Club, London (2024-5); Pond Society, Shanghai (2024); Aberto 03, __São Paulo, Brazil __(2024); Le Consortium, Dijon, France (2024); Andrew Kreps Gallery, New York, NY (2024); Olivia Foundation, Mexico City (2024); The Green Family Foundation, Dallas, TX (2024); James Cohan Gallery, New York, NY (2024); Pippy Houldsworth Gallery, London, UK (2023); amongst others.
