THEODOR WERNER

The most important creative period of Theodor Werner began in 1947, when he became a major representative of abstract painting. From 1946 to 1959 he lived and worked in Berlin. In 1950 Werner became a member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund 1950, which was reestablished after World War II, and he participated in its first annual exhibition in 1951 at the Berlin Hochschule der Künste Berlin with four works. From 1950 to 1955 he was active there as a member of the artists’ group ZEN 49. Furthermore, from 1955 to 1969, he was a member of the Academy of Arts, Berlin (West), Visual Arts Section. And from 1956 to 1962 Deputy Director of the Visual Arts Section of the Academy of Arts, Berlin (West). In 1956 Theodor Werner was appointed honorary senator at the Academy of Fine Arts, now the University of the Arts.

Theodor Werner was a participant in documenta 1 in 1955 and - like his wife Woty - was represented at documenta II in 1959 in Kassel. In 1959 he moved to Munich, where he lived and worked until his death. He died in 1969, one month before his 83rd birthday, and was buried in Munich’s Waldfriedhof.

His paintings are represented in the collections of the New York Museum of Modern Art and the Stuttgart State Gallery.

Theodor Werner bequeathed his artistic estate to the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen in Munich.
