Zhai Xuanhong (b.1987, Changde, China)
Read MoreGraduated from the Oil Painting Department of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 2012, and currently works and lives in Shanghai.
Zhai's creative practice combines his own life experience and constantly develops a unique visual language of his own. Traditional oil painting on canvas, LED light box, 'brush strokes' that simulate the shape of LED lamp beads, 'additive' superposition, 'subtractive' monochrome, etc. He never defines his work with categories or materials but enjoys the state of perceiving and producing with his hands.
Luminous medium is the artist's canvas on which the paint grows freely. Pigments of different thicknesses form a picture full of relief, while the ever-changing light reveals different levels of grayscale, presenting a sense of time cycle. After the practice of monochromatic pigments in the White Landscape period and the continuous exploration of pigment accumulation in the New Series, white has become the only colour used in Zhai's Derivation Series in recent years. The work is as vibrant as ever but more elegant and restrained. With the growth of life and work experience, Zhai explored a unique working method between traditional painting and luminous media.
