Press Release

This exhibition emerged from a unique initiative: Orsay Lab, a call for projects launched in 2025 for young people aged 18 to 25. This invitation to the younger generation aims to inspire original and socially engaged projects rooted both in the museum’s collections and in contemporary issues.

The call for projects was won by Jad Bestautte, a student in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, whose aim was to raise awareness on mental health and emotional sensitivity among young people by drawing on the evocative capacities of the Musée d’Orsay’s collections.

“I conceived this project with the idea that the museum can become a meeting place, where the artworks serve as launching points for connecting with others; a place where mental health concerns have a place.

For several weeks, adolescents receiving care at the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Department of the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital visited the Musée d’Orsay.

Together, we observed the artworks. Over the course of these visits, they became projective spaces, creating a resonance between 19th-century representations and today’s questionings and lived experiences.

These encounters inspired a video conceived as a sensory experience—a dialogue between past and present experiences, an echo of the works on display in this room.

Through this project, I sought to create a space for conversation and attentiveness, where voices that are often overlooked can resonate beyond the hospital walls.

Providing care involves recognizing that everyone needs a place, the opportunity to be heard, and the chance to be viewed differently.”

About the Gallery

The history of the museum, of its building is quite unusual. In the centre of Paris on the banks of the Seine, opposite the Tuileries Gardens, the museum was installed in the former Orsay railway station, built for the Universal Exhibition of 1900. So the building itself could be seen as the first “work of art” in the Musee d’Orsay, which displays collections of art from the period 1848 to 1914.
