Asprey Studio presents Esc Keys by Susan Kare, launching on 8 October during London Frieze Week 2024 at the Asprey Studio Gallery in Mayfair, London. The collection consists of digital and physical pieces by Susan Kare, the iconic graphic designer whose pioneering pixel art defined the visual language of the original Apple Macintosh in the early 1980s.
Susan Kare (b. 1954) is ‘the designer who gave the Macintosh a smile’, known for creating the distinctive icons, typefaces and GUIs that ‘humanised the computer’ during her work at Apple in the early 1980s, such as the ‘floppy disk’ for saving files and the ‘trash can’ for deleting them.
The title Esc Keys draws inspiration from the ‘esc’ key on a computer keyboard and the broader concept of ‘escapism.’ This collection includes new icons, available as enamelled images on silver computer keycaps, which can be worn as pendants on necklaces. The collection of keys can also be wall-mounted, blending digital design with contemporary art.
This exhibition—which includes works by other digital artists and a new prototype of the Asprey Bugatti Egg—represents Asprey Studio’s specialisation in exploring the intersection of digital and physical mediums, pushing the boundaries of art through state-of-the-art technological innovations.
