Catherine Nichols Appointed Curator of the 18th Lyon Biennale
The Australian curator of Berlin’s Hamburger Bahnhof will lead the event, set to take place from September to December 2026. Save to My Ocula
Catherine Nichols has been appointed curator of the 18th Lyon Biennale of Contemporary Art. Isabelle Bertolotti, artistic director of the Biennale, highlighted Nichols’ interdisciplinary expertise as an art historian, writer, and curator. Nichols was particularly praised for her artistic direction of Manifesta 14 in Prishtina, Kosovo.
Nichols has curated significant exhibitions such as Beuys: We are the Revolution (2008) and Capital: Debt – Territory – Utopia (2016), both at Hamburger Bahnhof – Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart in Berlin. She is currently preparing solo exhibitions for artists Delcy Morelos and Petrit Halilaj, scheduled for 2025.
Nichols expressed her excitement about leading the 2026 Lyon Biennale, describing it as ‘at once situated and connected, audacious yet responsive, and, above all, attuned to the urgencies and possibilities of the present’.
The 16th edition of the Biennale was curated by Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath, the duo who have co-directed Hamburger Bahnhof since 2022. —[O]
