‘Between Documentary and Dream’: Sohrab Hura Wins Eye Art and Film Prize

Indian artist Sohrab Hura is the winner of the 2025 Eye Art & Film Prize, awarded annually by Eye Filmmuseum to an artist or filmmaker whose work innovatively bridges visual art and cinema. 

He joins a list of past winners of the Eye Prize including Wang Bing, Francis Alÿs, and Garrett Bradley.

Hura’s interdisciplinary approach combining photography, film, drawing and painting has netted him €30,000 to support the development of new work, along with a presentation at Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam.

Selected by an international jury chaired by Eye director Bregtje van der Haak, Hura was praised for his poetic yet critical exploration of contemporary realities, particularly in South Asia. 

The jury said he moves effortlessly from still to moving images and cinematic rhythms to photo collages, resulting in works that sit ‘somewhere between essay and encounter, between documentary and dream’.

A member of Magnum Photos, the New Delhi-based artist has presented solo exhibitions at institutions including MoMA PS1 earlier this year and has work in major collections likeMoMA and the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art. —[O]
