Young Brazilian painter and sculptor Yuli Yamagata‘s first solo show in New York recently opened at Anton Kern Gallery.
We had the pleasure of chatting with Yamagata back in April ahead of her solo exhibition at the Sao Paulo-based gallery Fortes D’Aloia & Gabriel and have been keenly following her practice ever since. This current exhibition continues her exploration into themes of taste and the grotesque through unique soft sculptures and fabric paintings.
Monsters and fictional dreamscapes populate the artist’s work, as seen in Yoru Ika (2021), in which a creature with green tentacles and a 3D head drifts across the canvas.
