Chung Chang-Sup‘s solo at PKM Gallery is one of the many great exhibitions to catch in Seoul alongside Kiaf and Frieze.
A Dansaekhwa pioneer, Chung Chang-Sup was a forerunner in Korean contemporary art, seamlessly imbuing a Korean aesthetic consciousness into his work.
The artist developed a unique approach to using fibre from the inner bark of a mulberry tree indigenous to Korea, creating a fine pulp that he applied to the surface of the canvas. This highly tactile approach to image-making reflected Chung Chang-Sup’s ambition to unify art, nature, and the self.
