By Rory Mitchell – 8 February 2023, London

Imi Knoebel‘s multitude of colour and form radiates through the galleries of White Cube Bermondsey in London.

Presenting new paintings and a never-before-seen major installation, the German artist showcases a continuation of his exploration into the infinite possibilities of abstraction.

Marrying simple materials like acrylic, wood and aluminium with Malevich’s notion of ‘pure perception’, Knoebel’s body of work prompts sentiments of playfulness and vivacity in the viewer.

Knoebel’s exquisite use of colour and composition is captivating to witness in the flesh.

His sublime minimalism was made all the more alluring on the opening night by an accompanying performance by post-punk band The Raincoats, whom the artist has been affiliated with since Knoebel’s wife, Carmen Knoebel, established iconic German nightclub Ratinger Hof.

Knoebel’s mesmerising dedication to minimalist abstract art runs until 26 March 2023 in her exhibition Once Upon a Time at White Cube Bermondsey.
