New York galleries opened some of their most anticipated exhibitions on the heels of The Armory Show. Among them is Mark Grotjahn‘s Out of Country (10 September–19 October 2024) at Gagosian‘s 980 Madison Avenue location.
This exhibition features new and recent works that conclude the American artist’s ‘Backcountry’ series (2021–23). Whipped up through violently dynamic strokes, striations, and ‘slugs’ (small rolls of paint made from excess impasto), these high-energy paintings exemplify Grotjahn’s skill for churning surfaces.
His roiling swells of paint combine a striking palette of reds, yellows, blues, and greens. The layering of contrasting colours not only adds tension and depth but also reflects the natural landscapes that inspired these works, connecting viewers to the serene yet untamed wilderness of rural western Colorado.
