Reggie Burrows Hodges’ first solo exhibition in Los Angeles, The Reckoning (6 May–7 July 2023), is now on at Karma.
Hodges paints his canvases black before carving figures from the darkness with acrylic and pastel.
In The Reckoning, the Compton-born, Maine-based artist builds bedrooms and bathrooms with foggy brushwork where they contemplate their reflections in private moments.
In Inner Impulse (2023), a woman stands in front of a bathroom sink contemplating her reflection in a compact mirror. With the details of her face obscured, we are invited to see the woman through her posture, the glimpses of her clothing caught in the light, and the room itself, rendered in shades of pale purple and olive green.
These are works that simultaneously ask us how we see others and ourselves.
