Bartha_contemporary is pleased to announce News and Weather, an exhibition bringing together three artists whose work explores the changing conditions of daily life. The title recalls the familiar radio announcement, connecting tidal movements and bodily rhythms with recurring patterns in news media. The exhibition was conceived in close collaboration with Susan Morris.
Jill Baroff’s installation of 21 Tide Drawings: Pacific (January 1 – January 7, 2008), 2008 - 09, charts tidal movement on the Pacific coast over seven consecutive days, from 1 to 7 January 2008. Completed in 2009, each day occupies three drawings within an expansive grid. Their fine lines resolve into shifting densities, giving an absorbing visual presence to movements usually experienced only in passing. Related installations belong to the collections of Museum Folkwang, Essen, and the Hamburger Kunsthalle.
Susan Morris presents two works recently exhibited in Living by the Rule: Contemporary meets Medieval at the Sainsbury Centre, Norwich. In her large Jacquard tapestry SunDial:NightWatch_Activity and Light 2010-2012 (Herringbone Weave), 2017, 1,096 days of activity and light recordings are translated directly into woven thread. Collected on a wrist-worn Actiwatch, the data forms a self-portrait through sleep, wakefulness, and light exposure. Her newly published artist’s book Concordance (2005–2025), 2026, examines another rhythm, rearranging the language of the daily newspaper to expose habitual expressions and accidental poetry.
Mike Meiré’s cast aluminium reliefs DEMOCRACY IN THE DUST and BACKLASH, both 2025, preserve the creases and worn surfaces of discarded newspapers. Part of his Eternal News series, they give physical weight and permanence to an ephemeral medium. Their titles come from a year-long, AI-assisted analysis of recurring words in news headlines, incidentally linking them to Morris’s Concordance.
Across the works in this show, small details reveal variations within seemingly familiar patterns. A week of tidal movements, three years of bodily rhythms, and the repeated language of news reportage become records through which the textures and patterns of everyday life reveal both the fragility of the natural and man-made world but also its inherent beauty.
Established at the turn of the century by Niklas and Daniela von Bartha, the London-based gallery, Bartha Contemporary, places a strong emphasis on non-figurative and conceptual works by mostly established American and European contemporary artists. Hailing from the second generation of the art-dealing von Bartha family, Niklas, along with his wife Daniela, maintains a retrospective look at underappreciated modernising movements of the past in the gallery programme, whilst championing the latest works of contemporary artists.
