Our 30th anniversary exhibition is dedicated to four artists who, in the 1950s and 60s, radically broke with the traditional aesthetic-formal ideas and limitations of painting (which were able to survive despite all the innovations of modernism) and made a decisive contribution to the renewal of the medium and of art itself: Hal Busse (Germany, 1936–2018), Dadamaino (Italy, 1930-2004), Yayoi Kusama (Japan, b. 1929) and Nanda Vigo (Italy, 1936–2020).
What all four have in common is that they were part of the international ZERO group. The works presented not only show how deeply the female artists were involved in the aesthetic discourse of the time, but above all that they played a decisive role in shaping and enriching it. The title ‘Tabula rasa’ refers to the programme of ZERO, but at the same time leaves room for a reception of the positions shown independent of this label, as all four artists also had successful careers and developments outside of ZERO.
