For over thirty years Leda Catunda has appropriated objects and images and used them as raw material in her art making, simultaneously challenging and mirroring the image ravenousness of our time. Catunda is particularly interested in pop culture, consumerism, taste, and the idea of belonging. The artist creates paintings using multiple fabrics, including velvet, silk, and voile. She also employs patterned textiles or creates patterns from her repertoire of drawings and images.
Among her recent exhibitions are the 33rd São Paulo Biennial (São Paulo, 2018); Histórias da Sexualidade, MASP (São Paulo, 2017), I Love You Baby, Tomie Ohtake Institute (São Paulo, 2016); Ephemera: Diálogos Entre-Vistas, Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Niterói (Niterói, 2016) and Leda Catunda: 1983-2008, Estação Pinacoteca (São Paulo, 2009). In 2020, Catunda has exhibitions scheduled at Carpintaria (Rio de Janeiro), Malba (Buenos Aires), Fondazione ICA (Milan), among others. Editora Cobogó has recently published a comprehensive monograph on her work.
