In Amampondomise, Tony Gum reimagines the Xhosa woman as both
subject and symbol of resilience. Sculpted from her own likeness, the

bust merges classical form with African identity, its rock-like surface
evoking strength and permanence. The dislodged arm becomes a
poignant metaphor for women’s undervalued labour and enduring
contribution to society. Through this work, Gum bridges ancestral
heritage with contemporary discourse, celebrating the matriarchal power
that continues to shape and sustain African life.
