David Zwirner is pleased to announce Retina Turner, an exhibition of work by Andra Ursuţa (b. 1979), which will take place at the gallery’s 537 West 20th Street location in New York. This presentation will debut a new body of cast-glass sculptures that continues the artist’s investigations of the medium; the resultant forms were made using processes that incorporate traditional and contemporary technologies. These ovoid panels—in translucent and murrine glass—contain hybrid bodies that are subtly anthropomorphic, and their surfaces, shifting in appearance from spectral to occluded, hint at the pathological and symbolic loss of vision.
This will be Ursuţa’s third solo presentation with the gallery after Joy Revision at David Zwirner London (2022) and Void Fill at David Zwirner Paris (2021). It will coincide with the artist’s solo show Apocalypse Now and Then at the DESTE Foundation for Contemporary Art’s Project Space in Hydra, Greece, which will be on view through October 31, 2025.

Andra Ursuţa was born in 1979 in Salonta, Romania, a small town on the Romanian-Hungarian border, and left for the United States in 1997. She moved to New York in 1999, and received a BA in art history and visual arts in 2002 from Columbia University, New York.
