David Zwirner is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by American artist Katherine Bernhardt (b. 1975) that will take place at the gallery’s 616 N Western Avenue location in Los Angeles. Featuring the artist’s signature lively brushwork and vibrant palette, the works in this presentation continue to expand Bernhardt’s unique visual lexicon, which culls from an irreverent pop vernacular as well as her own life and broader culture. The exhibited paintings focus on newer motifs such as Lucky Charms cereal marshmallows and sticks of butter, which are playfully combined with iconic imagery from her oeuvre, including the Sesame Street characters Cookie Monster and Elmo, the Pink Panther, and Garfield.
This will be Bernhardt’s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles since 2015 and her third with David Zwirner, and will run concurrently with A Match Made in Heaven, a two-person presentation with fashion designer Jeremy Scott at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Overland Park, Kansas. Bernhardt’s forthcoming retrospective at the Hangaram Art Museum at the Seoul Arts Center will open June 5, 2025.
Katherine Bernhardt (b. 1975) was born in St. Louis, Missouri and received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1998 and an MFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York, in 2000.
