Press Release

In this Viewing Room, David Zwirner is pleased to present a selection of Raymond Pettibon’s prints that demonstrates the breadth and complexity of his practice and its expressive quotation of word and image. In tandem, the artist’s work will be part of a special tribute to the dealer Hudson and his influential gallery Feature Inc. at Frieze New York.

This Viewing Room reflects the bold versatility of Pettibon’s cultural appetite throughout his career. Taking its point of departure in the Southern California punk-rock scene of the late 1970s and 1980s and the do-it-yourself aesthetic of album covers, comics, concert flyers, and fanzines that characterized the movement, his work has come to occupy its own genre of potent and dynamic artistic commentary. The prints available here range from 1991 to 2017 and draw on such iconic Pettibon imagery as surfers, football players, hearts, and eyes, with subjects ranging from politics to sexuality. Also featured are two portfolios of lithographs produced in conjunction with the artist’s project Plots on Loan (2000). More information and ruminations from the artist on series included in this Viewing Room can be found in Raymond Pettibon: Homo Americanus, Collected Works, copublished by David Zwirner Books and Deichtorhallen Hamburg - Sammlung Falckenberg on the occasion of Pettibon’s recent European traveling retrospective (2016).

About the Artist

Raymond Pettibon’s work embraces a wide spectrum of American “high” and “low” culture, from the deviations of marginal youth to art history, literature, sports, religion, politics, and sexuality. Taking their points of departure in the Southern California punk-rock culture of the late 1970s and 1980s and the “do-it-yourself” aesthetic of album covers, comics, concert flyers, and fanzines that characterized the movement, his drawings have come to occupy their own genre of potent and dynamic artistic commentary.
