Press Release

For Art Paris, Mattania Bösiger revisits the traditional genre of the still life, transformed and manipulated by contemporary digital tools. Everyday objects, which often exist only as digital files, are reinterpreted and materialised as pictorial illusions. Thanks to a meticulous interplay between light and shadow, they acquire a tangible, puzzling and enigmatic presence, giving rise to works that question our relationship with images.

The monochrome, icy treatment of the objects gives them a strange materiality, oscillating between the tangible and the unreal. A careful play of light and shadow reinforces this illusion, giving the objects a paradoxically hyper-realistic and artificial appearance. Mattania Bösiger’s paintings transport us into a surreal world where matter seems to vibrate with an enigmatic presence.

About the Artist

Mattania Bösiger (*1991, CH) lives and works in Basel. In his paintings, he explores the interfaces and overlaps between digital and analog realities. The illusion of space and the credibility of images are recurring themes in his work. Mattania repeatedly uses processes of translation and manipulation. Questions arise about the status of images and content that have repeatedly crossed the boundaries between the digital and physical worlds. Or what can be seen when supposedly familiar objects or motifs are created purely digitally and never existed physically.
