Fergus McCaffrey and Kyoto City are proud to present the exhibition Anselm Kiefer: Solaris at Nijo Castle, Kyoto from March 31st to June 22nd, 2025. Anselm Kiefer was born in Germany in March 1945 and he is amongst the most important artists of his generation. This exhibition is Kiefer’s largest ever in Asia, featuring thirty-three paintings and sculptures that will be displayed inside the Daidokoro Building and in the surrounding courtyards.

About the Artist

Anselm Kiefer evokes ideas of cultural memory and identity through his highly textural installations, paintings and sculptures. Referencing historical and literary sources, his giant-sized works are often considered Neo-Expressionist.
